How ASCII Art Turns Photos Into Text

Brightness becomes characters, and characters become shading. Here is the trick.

What is the Image to ASCII Art Converter?

Upload a photo and pick a target character width and a character set. The tool samples the image brightness in your browser and maps each dark-to-light value to a character, so dark areas become dense symbols and bright areas become light ones. ASCII art needs a browser canvas for pixel sampling, while the character ramp mapping itself is plain text logic.

How to use it

  1. Upload an image
  2. Set width and character set
  3. Copy the ASCII text

Worked example

At 80 characters wide with the Detailed set, a photo becomes 10 levels of text shading, with dense characters for shadows and light characters for highlights.

Why do dark areas use dense characters?

Dense symbols like @ cover more of the cell, mimicking darkness, while dots and spaces mimic light.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ASCII art look squashed?

Text characters are taller than wide, so height is scaled by about 0.55 to keep proportions.

Which character set is best?

Detailed gives smoother shading, Simple is cleaner for small sizes, and Blocks give a bold poster look.
