How to Fix a Sideways Photo

A quick rotation fixes orientation, but the angle matters. Here is the simple rule.

What is the Image Rotator?

Enter an angle in degrees and the tool rotates the image around its centre in your browser. Angles are normalised to the 0 to 360 range, and 90 or 270 degree turns swap width and height. Non-right-angle rotations leave triangular corners blank, since a rotated rectangle no longer fills a straight frame.

How to use it

  1. Upload an image
  2. Enter the rotation angle
  3. Download the rotated image

Worked example

A 90 degree rotation turns a landscape photo upright, swapping its width and height, with a normalised angle of 90 degrees and 1.57 radians.

What angle fixes a sideways phone photo?

Usually 90 or 270 degrees, depending on which way the phone was held when the photo was taken.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rotate by a negative angle?

Yes, negative angles rotate counter-clockwise and are normalised into the 0 to 360 range.

Why are corners blank at 45 degrees?

A rotated rectangle does not fill a straight frame, so the corner triangles have no image data.
