Image aspect ratios: 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 and more

Different screens and feeds favour different shapes, and cropping to the wrong one can cut off the subject. This guide explains the common ratios.

What is the Image Aspect Ratio Calculator?

This image-focused calculator simplifies a pixel width and height to their smallest ratio, such as 16:9, and finds the missing height when you scale the width. It works with plain pixel numbers and does not read image files.

How to use it

  1. Enter the image width and height in pixels.
  2. Optionally enter a new width to scale to.
  3. Read the simplified ratio and the scaled height.

Worked example

1920 by 1080 simplifies to 16:9, and scaling the width to 960 gives a height of 540.

How do I find an image aspect ratio?

Divide both the width and height by their greatest common divisor to get the smallest whole-number ratio.

Frequently asked questions
