How to Build an HTML Table (Rows, Cells and Header Rows)

A table is just rows of cells, optionally topped by headers. This guide explains the tags and when a header row helps.

What is the HTML Table Generator?

Tables in HTML are built from rows and cells, with an optional header row for column titles. This tool generates that markup for the size you choose, with placeholder header and cell text you can replace with your own content. The output is plain markup, ready to paste into a page or template.

How to use it

  1. Enter how many rows and columns you need.
  2. Choose whether to include a header row.
  3. Click Generate table and copy the markup.

Worked example

The sample size of 2 rows and 3 columns with a header row produces a table with 3 header cells and 6 body cells filled with placeholder text.

What is the difference between th and td?

th marks a header cell, usually bold and centred, while td marks an ordinary data cell in the table body.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the output directly on a page?

Yes. It is standard table markup; replace the placeholder text with your own content and add styling as needed.

Is there a size limit?

Rows are capped at 50 and columns at 20, so an accidental huge number cannot produce an unusable block of markup.
