Heading Structure (H1-H6) Done Right
Headings are your page's outline for readers, screen readers and search engines. Learn the hierarchy rules and the mistakes to avoid.
What is the Heading Structure Checker?
The Heading Structure Checker extracts every heading tag in order, counts them and warns when a page has zero or multiple H1 tags — the two most common heading mistakes.
How to use it
- Paste your page HTML.
- Click Check headings.
- Fix multiple H1s or skipped levels.
Worked example
A page with one H1, four H2s and two H3s passes with no warnings.
Should every H2 have an H3?
No. Use subheadings only where the content genuinely splits. Forced depth helps nobody.
Frequently asked questions
Can a page have more than one H1?
HTML5 allows it, but one H1 per page is the safest, clearest convention.
Do skipped levels matter?
Jumping from H2 to H4 confuses screen readers and outlines. Keep levels in order.
