Grout Quantities: From Tile Area to Bag Weight

Grout coverage depends on tile size and joint width, so the packaging figure is the key input. This post shows how to use it with an allowance.

What is the Grout Calculator?

Enter the tiled area and the coverage of one kilogram of grout, and the tool adds a 10 percent allowance for waste and spills before rounding up to whole kilograms. The allowance is shown separately.

How to use it

  1. Measure the tiled area in square metres.
  2. Enter the coverage per kilogram from the grout packaging.
  3. Click Calculate Grout.

Worked example

10 sq m at 2 sq m per kilogram needs 5 kg exactly, or 5.5 kg with waste, rounded up to 6 kg.

Do small tiles need more grout?

Yes, smaller tiles mean more joints per square metre, which uses more grout for the same area.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix a partial bag later?

Yes, but matching colour across batches can be tricky, so buy the full need in one batch where possible.

What if joints are wide?

Wide joints use more grout, so the coverage per kilogram will be lower; use the packaging figure for your joint width.
