Gravel Quantities: Volume, Weight, and Depth
Gravel is ordered by volume but carried by weight, so you need both numbers. This post explains the density figure and the depth choice.
What is the Gravel Calculator?
Enter area and depth, and the tool gives the volume in cubic metres plus an approximate weight using 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre, with a 10 percent allowance shown separately. Weight matters because delivery and barrowing limits are set by weight, not volume.
How to use it
- Measure the area in square metres.
- Enter the depth in centimetres.
- Click Calculate Gravel.
Worked example
10 sq m at 5 cm deep needs 0.5 cubic metres, or 0.55 with waste, weighing about 0.88 tonnes.
How deep should a gravel path be?
Around 5 cm over a firm base is typical for foot paths, with deeper layers for driveways.
Frequently asked questions
Does gravel type change the weight?
Yes, density varies by stone type and size, so 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre is an approximation.
Should I include a membrane?
A weed membrane under gravel helps, but it does not change the volume calculation.
