How to Calculate a Grade Percentage and Letter Grade

A raw score only makes sense once it is turned into a percentage and a grade. Here is the straightforward conversion.

What is the Grade Calculator?

Divide the marks earned by the total marks and multiply by 100 to get the percentage, then map it to a letter grade: A for 90 and above, B for 80 to 89, C for 70 to 79, D for 60 to 69, and F below 60. It is a quick way to make sense of any single test or assignment score.

How to use it

  1. Enter the marks you earned.
  2. Enter the total marks available.
  3. Press Calculate to see your percentage and letter grade.

Worked example

Earned 85 out of 100: the tool gives 85 percent and grade B.

What grade is 85 out of 100?

It is 85 percent, which is a B on the standard scale used here, since B covers 80 to 89. The percentage is 85 divided by 100 times 100, and the letter follows from where that percentage falls in the grade bands.

Frequently asked questions

What grading scale does this use?

The common scale where A starts at 90, B at 80, C at 70 and D at 60. Your school or institution may use different boundaries.

Can earned marks be higher than total marks?

No, that would give a percentage above 100, so the calculator asks you to check the figures in that case.
