How to Calculate Your GPA From Letter Grades and Credits
A GPA is not a simple average of grades, because courses carry different credit weights. This guide shows the weighted calculation step by step.
What is the GPA Calculator?
List each course on its own line as a letter grade followed by its credits. The tool converts each letter to points, where A is 4, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1 and F is 0, weights each course by its credits, and divides total grade points by total credits to give the GPA.
How to use it
- Type one course per line as a letter grade, then a comma, then its credits.
- Use A, B, C, D or F for the grade.
- Calculate to see your total credits and your GPA.
Worked example
A,3 / B,3 / A,4 gives 37 grade points over 10 credits, so the GPA is 3.7.
What is the GPA for an A in a 3-credit course, a B in a 3-credit course and an A in a 4-credit course?
Convert the grades to points and multiply by credits: 4 times 3 is 12, 3 times 3 is 9, and 4 times 4 is 16, giving 37 grade points over 10 credits. Dividing 37 by 10 gives a GPA of 3.7.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to a line I type wrong?
Lines that do not match the letter-and-credits format are skipped and counted, so your GPA is worked out only from the valid lines.
Does an F count towards my credits?
Yes. An F earns zero grade points but its credits still count in the total, which is why it lowers the GPA.
