How to Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide Fractions (With a Free Calculator)
Fractions feel tricky until you see the steps. This guide explains each operation in plain language, with a free calculator to check your work.
What is the Fraction Calculator?
Enter two fractions and pick an operation. The tool works out the result, reduces it to its simplest form by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor, and also shows the decimal equivalent so you can use the answer either way.
How to use it
- Enter the first fraction as a numerator over a denominator.
- Choose an operation and enter the second fraction.
- Calculate to see the simplified fraction and its decimal value.
Worked example
1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6, which is 0.83 as a decimal.
How do you add 1/2 and 1/3?
Give both fractions the same denominator, then add the tops. 1/2 becomes 3/6 and 1/3 becomes 2/6, so the sum is 5/6, which is about 0.83. The calculator does the same steps and simplifies the answer for you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter a fraction with a zero denominator?
No. A denominator of zero is not allowed, and the tool will ask you to fix it before calculating.
Does the answer always come out simplified?
Yes. Every result is reduced to its simplest form, for example 4/6 becomes 2/3.
