File Hash Checker: Verify a Download With Its Fingerprint
Matching hashes is the fastest way to know a file arrived intact. This checker makes the fingerprint locally, in seconds.
What is the File Hash Checker?
A hash is a fingerprint for data, and this checker produces one for text you type or for a file you choose in the browser. It uses the platform Web Crypto functions, so the work happens on your own device and the file is never uploaded. If the crypto functions are unavailable, it says so plainly instead of inventing a result.
How to use it
- Type text to hash, or leave the text box empty and choose a file in the browser.
- Pick SHA-256, SHA-1, or SHA-512.
- Click Compute Hash.
- Compare the fingerprint with the one published by the source.
Worked example
Hashing abc with SHA-256 gives ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad.
What is the SHA-256 hash of abc?
It is ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad, which you can reproduce by hashing the three letters abc with SHA-256.
Frequently asked questions
Is the file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and hashed locally by Web Crypto, and it never leaves your device.
Why would hashing be unavailable?
Some restricted contexts do not expose Web Crypto. In that case the tool reports the gap instead of showing a fake hash.
