Fence Posts: The Plus-One That Beginners Miss
The post count is not just length divided by spacing. The end post adds one, and forgetting it leaves a fence short at the finish.
What is the Fence Posts Calculator?
Divide the fence length by the post spacing and add one for the end post, and you have the post count. Corner and gate posts may add extras, so treat the result as the count for one straight run plus any extras you plan separately.
How to use it
- Measure the fence run in metres.
- Enter the spacing between posts.
- Click Count Posts.
Worked example
30 m at 2.5 m spacing gives 12 bays and 13 posts.
Do gate posts count separately?
Yes. Gates usually need sturdier posts, so plan them as extras on top of the straight-run count.
Frequently asked questions
What if the length does not divide evenly?
The tool rounds the bay count down, so the last bay will be slightly shorter; adjust spacing evenly instead if you prefer equal bays.
How deep should posts go?
A common rule is about a third of the post underground, but local frost and soil conditions matter.
