A Simple Way to Total Daily Expenses

A running total only needs three numbers: how many entries, what they sum to, and what the average looks like. This guide shows the one-line-per-expense habit that keeps it honest.

What is the Expense Tracker?

Small purchases add up quietly, which is why a simple running total is so useful. Type each expense as a description and an amount, one per line, and this tool adds them up, counts them, and works out the average. In a browser you can keep adding rows and watch the totals move.

How to use it

  1. Type one expense per line as description, amount.
  2. Click Calculate Expenses.
  3. Check the total, average, and count.
  4. Add more rows in a browser to update the totals.

Worked example

For Coffee, Lunch, and Bus fare at 5.50, 12.00, and 2.50, the tool reports a total of 20.00 across 3 entries.

Why track the average as well as the total?

The total shows what left your pocket, while the average shows whether one large item or many small ones drove it.

Frequently asked questions

What format should amounts use?

Plain numbers with a dot for decimals, after a comma following the description.

Are currency symbols needed?

No. Leave symbols out so amounts parse cleanly; add your currency when you read the total.
