Driving Range: Tank Size Divided by Fuel Use

Range is not a mystery number on the dashboard. Tank size and consumption give it directly, and the reserve is what keeps you safe.

What is the Driving Range Calculator?

Range is tank size divided by fuel consumption, and this calculator turns those two numbers into kilometres. It assumes steady consumption; fast motorway driving, hills, and heavy loads all shorten the real range. Use it for planning, with a reserve margin.

How to use it

  1. Enter the tank size in litres.
  2. Enter fuel use in litres per 100 km.
  3. Click Calculate Range for the distance.

Worked example

A 50-litre tank at 7 litres per 100 km gives a range of about 714.29 km.

How far does a 50-litre tank go at 7 L/100 km?

About 714.29 km, before any reserve margin.

Frequently asked questions

Why is real range often shorter?

Speed, hills, cold weather, air conditioning, and load all raise consumption above the steady figure used here.

How big a reserve should I keep?

Aim to refuel with at least 50 to 80 km of range left, more in remote areas.
