How to Work Out a Discount Price

A discount percentage only makes sense once you turn it into an amount saved and a final price. This guide shows both steps in plain numbers.

What is the Discount Calculator?

This tool multiplies the original price by the discount percentage and divides by 100 to find the amount saved. It then subtracts that saving from the original price to give the final price you pay. It is ideal for sales, coupons, and clearance offers.

How to use it

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the discount percentage.
  3. Read the amount saved and the final price after the discount.

Worked example

Original price 200 with 25% off: discount 50, final price 150.

What is the final price of a 200 item with 25% off?

The final price is 150. The discount is 25% of 200, which is 50, and 200 minus 50 is 150. So you save 50 and pay 150.

Frequently asked questions

Is the discount taken off the original price?

Yes, the saving is calculated on the original price, and the final price is the original price minus that saving.

Can I enter a discount over 100%?

A discount above 100% would give a negative price, so keep the percentage between 0 and 100 for a sensible result.
