Deck Boards: Counting Boards With Room for Cuts
Deck boards get trimmed at ends and edges, so a bare division undercounts. This post shows the allowance and the rounding step.
What is the Deck Boards Calculator?
Enter the deck area and the coverage of one board, and the tool adds a 10 percent cutting allowance before rounding up to whole boards. The allowance covers end trims and awkward edges, and it is shown separately from the exact count.
How to use it
- Measure the deck area in square metres.
- Enter the coverage of one board.
- Click Count Boards.
Worked example
15 sq m at 0.5 sq m per board needs 30 boards exactly, or 33 with the 10 percent allowance.
Does board direction change the count?
The total coverage is the same, but direction changes where cuts fall, which can change waste on narrow or shaped decks.
Frequently asked questions
Should I allow extra for picture framing?
Yes, framed borders use extra board length, so add a further allowance for that detail.
What about gaps between boards?
Coverage per board should already reflect the laid width including the gap; check the supplier's figure.
