How to Calculate the Number of Days Between Two Dates

Counting days by hand across months and leap years is easy to get wrong. Here is a simple way to work out the gap between any two dates.

What is the Days Between Dates Calculator?

Pick a start date and an end date and this calculator works out the gap between them. It counts the absolute number of days, so the order of the dates does not matter, then divides by 7 for weeks and by 30.44 (the average month length) for an approximate month count.

How to use it

  1. Enter the first date in the start date field.
  2. Enter the second date in the end date field.
  3. Press Calculate to see the gap in days, weeks and approximate months.

Worked example

From 2026-01-01 to 2026-01-31 the tool gives: 30 days, 4.29 weeks and 0.99 approximate months.

How many days are there between 1 January and 31 January?

There are 30 days between 1 January and 31 January of the same year. That is about 4.29 weeks and roughly 0.99 months. The day count is exact; the week and month figures are just the same gap expressed in larger units.

Frequently asked questions

Does the order of the dates matter?

No. The calculator uses the absolute difference, so swapping the two dates gives the same result.

Why is the month figure approximate?

Months have different lengths, so the result divides the day count by 30.44, the average number of days in a month, rather than counting calendar months.
