CSV to Markdown Guide: Turning Spreadsheet Rows Into Tables
Learn how CSV parsing handles quoted commas and how markdown tables are built.
What is the CSV to Markdown Converter?
This tool parses comma-separated rows and handles quoted cells that contain commas, as well as doubled quotes inside quotes. The first row becomes the table header, and a separator row is added below it. The result can be pasted straight into a markdown document, readme or note.
How to use it
- Paste your CSV text into the box.
- Click Convert.
- Copy the markdown table from the results.
Worked example
For the sample, the tool produces a markdown table with Name, Age and City as headers, Alice and Smith, John as rows, and a separator row of dashes below the header.
Why does my table look broken in some viewers?
Usually because a row has a different number of cells. This tool pads shorter rows with empty cells so every row matches the widest row.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to a comma inside quotes?
It stays inside the cell. Quoted cells are parsed as one value, so Smith, John remains a single name cell.
Does the first row have to be a header?
The tool treats the first row as the header. If your data has no header row, add one first or the first data row will be used as headers.
