How Long Will It Take to Pay Off a Credit Card?

Minimum payments can stretch a card balance over many years. A fixed, larger payment changes the maths completely.

What is the Credit Card Payoff Calculator?

Card interest accrues monthly on the balance still owed, so a fixed payment clears the debt only if it exceeds each month's interest charge. This calculator uses the payoff formula, which inverts the loan formula: from the balance, the monthly rate and the payment, it finds how many months the balance takes to reach zero, and the interest paid along the way.

How to use it

  1. Enter your current card balance and the annual APR.
  2. Enter the fixed amount you will pay every month.
  3. Press Calculate to see how many months it takes and the total interest.

Worked example

Balance 5000, APR 20%, payment 200 per month: about 32.61 months (roughly 2 years and 9 months), total paid about 6521.71, total interest about 1521.71.

Why does a credit card take so long to pay off?

Because interest is charged every month on the balance, and a small payment may barely cover that interest. The balance then falls very slowly, so interest keeps accruing for years. Raising the payment above the interest charge is what starts the balance falling in earnest, and the payoff formula shows exactly how many months that takes.

Frequently asked questions

What if my payment only covers the interest?

Then the balance never falls, and the debt is never cleared. You need a payment above the monthly interest charge for the balance to shrink.

Will paying more really save much interest?

Yes, often a lot. A larger payment shortens the payoff sharply, and fewer months of interest means a much smaller total interest bill.
