How to Calculate Your Cost Per Mile
A single cost-per-mile figure makes it easy to compare trips, vehicles and routes. Here is how to work it out from any total cost.
What is the Cost Per Mile Calculator?
Divide your total driving cost for a trip or period by the distance in miles to get the cost per mile, then multiply by 100 for the cost per 100 miles. The total can include fuel, tolls, parking or anything else you want to spread across the journey.
How to use it
- Enter the total driving cost for the trip or period.
- Enter the distance driven in miles.
- Press Calculate to see the cost per mile and per 100 miles.
Worked example
Total cost 120, distance 300 miles: the tool gives 0.4 per mile and 40 per 100 miles.
What is the cost per mile if a 300-mile trip costs 120 in total?
It is 0.4 per mile, because 120 divided by 300 is 0.4, which is the same as 40 per 100 miles. The per-100-miles figure is just the per-mile figure multiplied by 100, and it is often the easier number to quote.
Frequently asked questions
What should I include in the total cost?
Include whatever you want to measure: fuel alone for a fuel cost per mile, or fuel plus tolls and parking for a fuller trip cost per mile.
Why show the per 100 miles figure too?
Per-mile costs are often small decimals, so the per-100-miles figure is easier to read and compare at a glance.
