Mixing two colours: how the midpoint is found

Mixing paint and mixing light behave differently, but screen colours follow a simple channel blend. This guide explains the maths.

What is the Color Mixer?

Choose two colours and a mix percentage, and this tool blends their red, green and blue channels in that proportion. A 50/50 mix gives the exact midpoint; moving the slider toward one colour shifts the result toward it.

How to use it

  1. Enter two hex colours.
  2. Set the share of the first colour.
  3. Read the mixed hex and RGB values.

Worked example

Red and blue at 50/50 mix to #800080, a balanced purple.

How do you mix red and blue?

Average each channel: half of red plus half of blue gives purple, because red and blue stay full while green stays at zero.

Frequently asked questions

What does 50% mean here?

It means half of each colour, giving the exact midpoint between them.

Is mixing done in RGB?

Yes, this tool blends the red, green and blue channels directly.
