Designing with colour blindness in mind
About one in twelve men and a smaller share of women see colour differently, so colour alone should never be the only signal. This guide explains the main types.
What is the Color Blindness Simulator?
This tool applies a standard simulation matrix to your colour for protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia or achromatopsia. The result is an approximation of how that colour may appear, not a medical test or a diagnosis.
How to use it
- Enter a hex colour.
- Choose a vision type.
- Compare the original and simulated colours.
Worked example
#FF5733 under protanopia simulation becomes a muted yellow-olive tone, showing how red-green distinction can fade.
What is protanopia?
It is a form of red-blindness in which reds look darker and harder to tell apart from greens.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a medical test?
No, it is only a visual approximation and cannot diagnose anything.
Why check colour blindness at all?
It helps you avoid relying on red-versus-green alone to carry meaning.
