Coffee Ratios: Why Weighing Beats Scooping

Scoops vary with grind and bean, but grams do not. A fixed ratio turns a good cup into a repeatable one.

What is the Coffee Ratio Calculator?

Brew ratio is coffee to water by weight, and it decides whether a cup tastes thin, balanced, or heavy. This calculator works out the missing side: enter coffee to get water, or water to get coffee, for the ratio you choose. A kitchen scale gives the most reliable results.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you know the coffee or the water amount.
  2. Enter that amount in grams.
  3. Pick a ratio and click Calculate Ratio.

Worked example

20 g of coffee at 1:16 needs 320 g of water.

How much water does 20 g of coffee need at 1:16?

320 g of water, since each gram of coffee pairs with 16 g of water.

Frequently asked questions

What ratio suits a pour-over?

Around 1:15 to 1:17 gives a balanced cup. Stronger tastes sit near 1:14, lighter ones near 1:17.

Does water weight equal water volume?

Almost. One gram of water is about one millilitre, so grams and millilitres can be used interchangeably here.
