Cocktail Dilution: The Quiet Ingredient in Every Stirred Drink

Water from ice is not a flaw in a stirred cocktail; it is part of the recipe. Measuring it explains why a well-stirred drink tastes smoother than a rushed one.

What is the Cocktail Dilution Calculator?

Stirring a cocktail over ice melts water into the drink, which lowers its strength and softens harsh edges. This calculator shows the final ABV and volume after a chosen amount of dilution water is added. Use it to plan stirred drinks rather than guessing how long to stir.

How to use it

  1. Enter the starting volume and ABV.
  2. Enter the dilution water in millilitres.
  3. Click Calculate Dilution for the final strength.

Worked example

100 ml at 30 percent ABV diluted with 25 ml of water becomes 125 ml at 24 percent ABV.

What happens when 100 ml at 30 percent ABV gains 25 ml of water?

It becomes 125 ml at 24 percent ABV, softer and more balanced than the undiluted mix.

Frequently asked questions

How much dilution does stirring usually add?

Roughly 20 to 30 percent of the starting volume for a well-stirred drink, depending on ice and time.

Does shaking dilute more than stirring?

Usually, yes. Shaking breaks ice faster and adds water more quickly, which also chills the drink harder.
