Cholesterol Ratios: One Number From Two Results
A ratio can be easier to track than two separate numbers. This post explains the total-to-HDL ratio and what it leaves out.
What is the Cholesterol Ratio Calculator?
The total-to-HDL ratio packs two cholesterol numbers into one figure that many clinicians glance at first. Enter total cholesterol and HDL in the same unit and the tool divides them. Lower ratios are generally viewed more favourably, but this is general information, not personal medical advice.
How to use it
- Enter total cholesterol.
- Enter HDL cholesterol in the same unit.
- Click Calculate Ratio.
Worked example
Total 5 and HDL 1.2 give a ratio of 4.17, in the middle band.
Is a lower ratio always better?
As a rough guide, yes, but the ratio hides the individual values, so a clinician still looks at the full lipid panel.
Frequently asked questions
Which units should I use?
Any unit works as long as total and HDL use the same one, since the unit cancels in the division.
Does this replace a lipid panel review?
No. It is a summary figure, not a substitute for reviewing all the results.
