Character Sheets: Know Your Character Before the Reader Does

A character sheet keeps traits, motives, and flaws consistent across a whole story. This builder starts one from three facts.

What is the Character Sheet Builder?

Enter a character's name, role, and defining trait, and the tool assembles a sheet with motivation, flaw, and arc prompts. This is a starting sheet to deepen as you write, not a complete character.

How to use it

  1. Enter the character name and role.
  2. Add the key trait.
  3. Click Build Character Sheet and deepen it as you write.

Worked example

For Lena the cartographer, the sheet records her stubborn curiosity and prompts for motivation, flaw, and arc.

What belongs on a character sheet?

Name, role, key trait, motivation, flaw, and arc — enough to write the character consistently.

Frequently asked questions

How detailed should a sheet be?

Start short. Add backstory only when it changes how the character acts.

Can a flaw be a strength?

Yes, the best flaws are strengths pushed too far, like curiosity becoming recklessness.
