How to Name a Character Readers Remember

A character name should sound right when spoken aloud and suit the world of the story. Here is a practical way to find one.

What is the Character Name Generator?

This tool builds three character names at a time from first and last name lists matched to fantasy, science fiction, mystery, or adventure. Add a keyword to weave a word you like into the names, or leave it blank for fully random characters.

How to use it

  1. Type a keyword if you want it woven into the names, or leave it blank.
  2. Choose the genre that fits your story.
  3. Press Generate names and pick the one that fits the character.

Worked example

With the keyword Raven and genre Fantasy, you get: Raven Ashford, Elena Raven, and Raven Stormwind. With no keyword, you get three random fantasy pairings instead.

Should a character name match the story genre?

It helps when it does, because names carry a flavour: older-sounding surnames suit mystery, while invented words suit science fiction. The name still needs to be easy to read and pronounce, whatever the genre.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these names in my own story?

Yes. The names are made up from common name parts, so you are free to use them in stories, games, and roleplay.

What does the keyword do?

The keyword is used as a first or last name in each suggestion, so your chosen word becomes part of every result.
