Caulk Tubes: Counting Tubes for Gaps and Seams
Starts and stops waste caulk, and a bead that is too thin fails early. This post shows the allowance that covers both realities.
What is the Caulk Tubes Calculator?
Enter the total length of gaps to seal and the coverage of one tube, and the tool adds a 10 percent allowance for starts, stops, and waste before rounding up to whole tubes. The allowance is shown separately.
How to use it
- Measure the total gap length in metres.
- Enter the coverage of one tube.
- Click Count Tubes.
Worked example
20 m at 10 m per tube needs 2 tubes exactly, or 2.2 with waste, rounded up to 3 tubes.
Does bead size change tube coverage?
Yes, a lot. A thick bead covers far fewer metres per tube than a thin one, so use the figure for your bead size.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a spare tube?
For a bathroom or kitchen, yes. A spare tube covers touch-ups without a colour or type mismatch.
Can opened tubes be saved?
Briefly, with the tip sealed, but old caulk can cure in the tube, so use fresh tubes for important seals.
