Carpet Length: From Room Area to Roll Length
Area alone does not order carpet, because the roll width decides how much length you need. This post shows the division and the cutting allowance.
What is the Carpet Rolls Calculator?
Carpet comes off a roll of fixed width, so the tool divides room area by roll width to get linear metres, then adds a 10 percent allowance for cuts and joins. Enter area and roll width and the length appears at once.
How to use it
- Measure the room area in square metres.
- Enter the carpet roll width in metres.
- Click Calculate Carpet Length.
Worked example
20 sq m from a 4 m wide roll needs 5 m exactly, or 5.5 m with the 10 percent allowance.
Why does roll width matter so much?
A wider roll covers the same area with fewer metres and fewer joins, which also means fewer visible seams.
Frequently asked questions
What about doorways and joins?
Joins and doorway cuts are exactly what the waste allowance is for; complex rooms may need more.
Should I round up?
Yes, carpet is sold in whole lengths, so round the allowed length up to the next whole metre.
