How to Check a Car Loan Payment Before You Sign

Dealers often talk monthly payments, not total cost. Running the numbers yourself first keeps the focus on what the loan really costs.

What is the Car Loan Calculator?

The amount you actually borrow is the car price minus what you pay up front. This calculator takes that loan amount, applies your annual interest rate over the term in years, and uses the standard amortising formula to give a fixed monthly payment that clears the loan by the end of the term.

How to use it

  1. Enter the car price and your down payment.
  2. Enter the annual interest rate and the term in years.
  3. Press Calculate to see the loan amount, monthly payment and total interest.

Worked example

Car price 25000, down payment 5000, rate 6%, term 5 years: loan amount 20000, monthly payment about 386.66, total interest about 3199.36.

Should I take the longer car loan with the lower payment?

Only if you need the lower payment to fit your budget. A longer term means more months of interest, so you pay more in total and may still owe money after the car has lost much of its value. A shorter term costs more each month but usually saves a meaningful amount of interest.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bigger down payment worth it?

Yes. It shrinks the loan, which lowers both the monthly payment and the total interest, and it also reduces the risk of owing more than the car is worth.

Why do car loans differ from mortgages?

The maths is the same, but car loans are usually shorter, so the monthly payment is higher relative to the amount borrowed.
