Blood Pressure Categories: Reading the Two Numbers
Two numbers, five categories. This post explains what each band means and why one reading never tells the whole story.
What is the Blood Pressure Checker?
Enter systolic and diastolic numbers and the tool sorts the reading into the usual categories: normal, elevated, stage 1, stage 2, or hypertensive crisis. Readings in the crisis range, or any reading with chest pain, breathlessness, or weakness, need urgent care. This tool is not medical advice — check with a clinician about your own readings.
How to use it
- Enter the systolic (top) number.
- Enter the diastolic (bottom) number.
- Click Check Reading.
Worked example
120/80 mmHg falls in stage 1 under the bands used here, since the diastolic value of 80 reaches the stage 1 threshold.
Is one high reading a diagnosis?
No. Blood pressure varies through the day, and diagnosis rests on repeated readings and a clinician's judgement.
Frequently asked questions
Which number matters more?
Both matter. The category uses whichever number lands in the higher band.
When should I seek urgent care?
For readings above 180/120, or any reading with chest pain, breathlessness, numbness, or weakness.
