Bird Cage Size: Minimum Is Not Ideal

A cage that only just fits a bird is not a good home. Minimum sizes are a floor to avoid, not a target to aim for.

What is the Bird Cage Size Calculator?

Pick your bird's size group and the tool gives minimum cage width, depth, and height as a starting guide. These are minimums, not ideals, and bigger is almost always better, especially for active or long-tailed species.

How to use it

  1. Pick your bird's size group.
  2. Click Check Bird Cage Size.
  3. Compare the minimum with cages you are considering.

Worked example

For a small bird such as a budgie, the guide minimum is 60 cm wide by 40 cm deep by 50 cm high.

Why does width matter more than height?

Birds fly sideways, not up and down, so horizontal room matters most for exercise and comfort.

Frequently asked questions

Is this veterinary advice?

No. It is a general guide. Species needs, including bar spacing and enrichment, vary widely.

Does out-of-cage time change the size needed?

It helps welfare a lot, but it does not make a tiny cage acceptable for the hours the bird spends inside.
