Bike Tyre Pressure: A Starting Point by Weight and Width

Tyre pressure is a balance: too hard bounces and grips less, too soft risks pinch flats. Weight and width set the sensible starting range.

What is the Bike Tire Pressure Calculator?

Enter total rider-plus-bike weight, tyre width, and surface type. The tool estimates a starting pressure with a simple rule that lowers pressure for wider tyres and rougher surfaces. This is a starting estimate, not a substitute for the tyre maker's limits or your own feel.

How to use it

  1. Enter rider-plus-bike weight.
  2. Enter tyre width in millimetres.
  3. Pick the surface and click Estimate Pressure.

Worked example

At 85 kg with 28 mm tyres on smooth road, the estimate is 100 - 12.5 + 2 = 89.5 PSI, or about 6.17 bar.

What pressure for 85 kg on 28 mm tyres?

About 89.5 PSI on smooth road by this rule, lowered for rough road or gravel.

Frequently asked questions

Should front and rear match?

Often the rear runs a little higher because it carries more weight, but this tool gives one starting figure.

Does it replace the tyre rating?

No. Never exceed the maximum printed on the tyre sidewall.
