Base64 Encoding Explained: How to Encode and Decode Text

Base64 shows up in emails, data URLs and configuration files. This guide explains what it does, when it helps, and when it does not.

What is the Base64 Encoder & Decoder?

Base64 turns text into a plain ASCII string that can travel safely through systems that only accept simple characters, and this tool reverses the process too. Paste text, choose encode or decode, and get the result at once. Decoding checks the characters and padding first, so broken input produces a clear error instead of silent garbage. It handles ordinary text well; it is not a form of encryption, so anyone can decode the output.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text in the box.
  2. Choose Encode to Base64 or Decode from Base64.
  3. Press the button and read the result.

Worked example

Encoding 'Hello, World!' gives SGVsbG8sIFdvcmxkIQ==.

Is Base64 secure for passwords?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption, so a password stored as Base64 is effectively readable. Use proper password hashing for credentials and Base64 only for transport and formatting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 the same as encryption?

No. Base64 only changes how data is represented, so anyone can decode it. Never use it to hide passwords or secrets.

Why does decoding fail on some input?

Base64 only allows letters, digits, plus, slash and up to two equals signs as padding, and its length must be a multiple of four. Anything else is rejected with an error.
