AVIF Explained: Tiny Files, Patchy Support
AVIF is efficient but young. Converting to PNG bridges the compatibility gap.
What is the AVIF to PNG Converter?
AVIF gives very small files but is not yet accepted by every editor. This tool decodes your AVIF in the browser and saves it as a PNG. AVIF decoding depends on browser support, so older browsers may fail on some AVIF files even when newer browsers open them fine.
How to use it
- Upload an AVIF image
- Set the scale if needed
- Download the PNG
Worked example
At 100 percent scale, an AVIF image becomes a same-size PNG that opens in almost any image editor.
Should I use AVIF on my website?
Yes with a fallback, since visitors on older browsers may not see AVIF images at all.
Frequently asked questions
Why does AVIF fail in some browsers?
AVIF support arrived later than WebP, so older browsers lack the decoder.
Is the PNG larger than the AVIF?
Usually yes, since PNG is lossless and AVIF compression is more aggressive.
