Udio Review: Great Song Editing, Held Back by Missing Downloads

Udio is one of the best AI song tools to work with, and one of the hardest to recommend without a warning. Its editing workflow, extending a track, rewriting a section, reshaping lyrics, is genuinely strong. But a song tool that cannot currently export its songs is a difficult purchase, and that single fact shapes this review.

Scores in this review are our own editorial judgement, not an aggregate of user ratings. AI output can be wrong — check important facts before relying on them.

What it is

Udio is a web-based AI music generator that creates songs with vocals from prompts, lyrics or uploaded audio. Unlike one-shot generators, it is built around iteration: generate a section, listen, edit the lyrics or music, extend the song, and repeat. It also offers voices, including saved voices on paid plans, and a library for organising your work. The product has been reshaped by licensing deals with major music companies, which is why its export rules changed.

Key features

The standout feature is editing. You can regenerate or rework individual sections, extend a track beyond its first length, remix an idea and adjust lyrics without starting over. Audio uploads let you start from a reference rather than a blank prompt, and style controls help steer the sound. Paid plans raise credit limits and allow more simultaneous generations, which matters when you are comparing takes.

Pricing

Udio has a free tier with 10 credits a day plus 100 credits a month, capped at a small number of longer songs per day. Standard costs 10 dollars a month, or 8 dollars a month billed annually, with 2,400 credits a month. Pro costs 30 dollars a month, or 24 dollars a month billed annually, with 6,000 credits a month. Audio, video and stem downloads were reported disabled during the licensing transition, so check the official pricing and help pages before paying.

What users like

Users commonly praise Udio's editing depth and sound quality, especially for vocal tracks that feel more crafted than a single prompt result. Many like the ability to iterate on one song over several sessions instead of discarding near-misses. Credit allowances on paid plans are also seen as generous for the price, and the interface is generally described as straightforward for a tool with this much control.

What users complain about

The dominant complaint is downloads: with audio, video and stem exports disabled, users feel they are paying for songs they cannot take elsewhere. That also clouds commercial use, since rights mean little without an exportable file. Other frustrations include free-tier limits that run out fast, and uncertainty about when, or whether, downloads will return.

Limitations to know

Treat Udio as a songwriting and listening workspace for now, not a distribution pipeline. AI output can still misfire on lyrics, pronunciation and style, so every track needs a careful listen. Licensing and ownership terms vary and must be checked on the official site before commercial use, and do not subscribe on the assumption that downloads will return by a particular date.

Who it is best for

Udio suits songwriters who enjoy shaping a song over time and who are happy to work inside one platform for now. It is a poor fit for anyone who needs to release, distribute or deliver audio files today, or who needs clear, exportable commercial rights as part of the purchase.

Verdict

Udio's editing is among the best in AI music, but a song generator that cannot export songs cannot score higher right now. If downloads return and commercial terms become clear again, this score should be revisited; until then, try the free tier and pay only if in-platform creation is enough for you. Our editorial score: 6.8/10 — our own judgement, not an aggregate of user ratings.
