Descript Review: Edit Your Podcast Like a Document

Descript changes editing from a timeline chore into a reading task. Transcribe a podcast or video, delete the sentences you do not want, and the media follows — no scrubbing, no razor tool, no audio engineering degree. Add filler-word removal, sound cleanup and a voice clone that patches your own mistakes, and you have the most approachable editor for spoken content. Metered hours and credits are the tax on that convenience, and heavy users must watch both meters.

Scores in this review are our own editorial judgement, not an aggregate of user ratings. AI output can be wrong — check important facts before relying on them.

What it is

Descript is an audio and video editor built around transcripts, available on desktop and web. You import or record audio or video, Descript transcribes it, and the transcript becomes the editing surface: delete a word and the corresponding audio or video goes with it, rearrange a paragraph and the media rearranges too. Around that core sit recording rooms for remote conversations, multitrack editing, captions, publishing and an AI co-editor that assists with editing, titles and clips. A voice clone of your own voice can regenerate words to fix mistakes without re-recording. Plans are priced per editor and metered by two allowances: media hours for audio and video you bring in, and AI credits for AI features.

Key features

Transcript editing is the defining feature and the reason most people switch: cutting ums, tangents and mistakes feels like editing a document. Filler-word removal and Studio Sound clean up recordings, removing background noise and making a home microphone sound closer to a studio one. The AI co-editor helps with underlord-style tasks such as removing retakes, generating clips for social media and drafting show notes. Overdub-style voice cloning lets you type a correction and hear it in your own voice, which saves re-recording a whole episode for one flubbed line. Captions, translation and dubbing extend one recording into other languages and formats, and screen recording plus multitrack timelines cover video tutorials and interviews.

Pricing

Descript offers a free plan with 1 hour of media a month, 100 one-time AI credits, 5 GB of storage and 720p exports with a watermark. Hobbyist costs 24 dollars a month, or 16 dollars a month billed annually, with 10 media hours, 400 AI credits and 1080p watermark-free export. Creator costs 35 dollars a month, or 24 dollars a month billed annually, with 30 media hours, 800 AI credits, 4K export and top-ups. Business costs 65 dollars a month, or 50 dollars a month billed annually, with 40 media hours, 1,500 AI credits and up to 5 seats. Enterprise is custom. Neither allowance rolls over, and only Creator and Business can buy top-ups, so a Hobbyist who runs out must upgrade. Prices can change, so check the official pricing page.

What users like

Users commonly praise Descript for making editing fast and approachable, with reviewers highlighting transcript editing as a genuine time-saver for podcasts and videos. Filler-word removal and Studio Sound draw frequent praise for making amateur recordings sound professional with little effort. Many creators value the voice-clone patching feature for fixing mistakes without re-recording, and the all-in-one workflow — record, transcribe, edit, caption, publish — that replaces several separate tools. Ease of use for non-editors is a recurring theme.

What users complain about

The most common complaints are about metering: media hours and AI credits running out mid-project, with no rollover and no top-ups on Hobbyist. Some users report transcription errors on unclear audio, strong accents or overlapping speech, requiring manual correction. Others find the AI co-editor's per-action credit costs hard to predict, and note that pricing and plan structures have changed enough that older guides describe plans you cannot buy. A smaller theme is performance on very long projects and the learning curve of the fuller video feature set.

Limitations to know

Descript's transcription is not perfect: it can mishear names, technical terms and quiet speech, and AI-generated words from voice cloning should be checked for naturalness and accuracy before publishing. Metered allowances mean a long interview or a video-heavy month can cost more than the headline plan price, especially once top-ups are needed. Voice cloning raises consent questions: only clone your own voice or voices you have clear permission to use, and disclose AI-generated audio where your audience would expect it. Always keep original recordings until a project is finished.

Who it is best for

Descript suits podcasters, YouTubers, course creators, marketers and teams producing spoken content regularly, especially anyone who dreads timeline editing. It is a strong fit for solo creators on Hobbyist or Creator and for small teams on Business. It is a weaker pick for traditional film editors who need frame-level video tools, for users with very long raw recordings that would blow through media hours, or for anyone who only needs transcription without editing.

Verdict

Descript is the easiest serious editor for spoken content: transcript editing alone justifies it for podcasters and video creators, and the cleanup, cloning and caption tools make it a complete workflow. The metering demands attention, and transcription still needs a human pass, but for turning recordings into publishable episodes quickly, nothing else feels this effortless. Our editorial score: 8.6/10 — our own judgement, not an aggregate of user ratings.
